New Mexico Personal Injury Law Tips

If you have been injured due to the negligence of another, it is important to immediately take the right steps to protect your rights. By reading the helpful hints in our blog you should have an understanding of what you need to do after being injured.

The aftermath of an auto accident, slip and fall, injury at work, or any other injury causing event can cause great stress to not only the victim, but also to his or her family. Oftentimes, the experience of going through the personal injury claim process can be nearly as stressful as the personal injury event itself.

Here are some tips in order to make the aftermath just a little easier for you:
    • 1) Contact an attorney as soon as reasonably possible immediately following your accident. This is critical since a qualified lawyer will know your rights and will help protect them from the very outset;
    • 2) Get representation before you speak to the insurance company who represents the at-fault party. The insurance companies record all of your statements. They have an advantage when they get you on tape saying, “Oh, I’m fine.” If you have to speak to the at-fault party’s insurance company before retaining an attorney then only speak about your property damage, but try to wait to discuss your physical injuries until you have a lawyer advise you;
    • 3) Stay in touch with your doctors. Some injuries, especially some soft-tissue injuries take some time to manifest themselves. You may initially feel fine after an accident, but then in one or two weeks you could be in severe pain;
    • 4) Be patient. A strong personal injury claim takes time.  Give your attorney the time he or she needs to work the case up to where it needs to be for an optimum settlement or jury verdict;
    • 5) Stay in touch with your attorney. Check in with your attorney from time to time to tell him or her about the status of your medical treatment.
